 A small Parian group of Lady Godiva on horseback by Goss, dating from the First Period 1875–1885.

This small group, marked underneath with Lady Godiva W H Goss, shows the young noblewoman, clothed only in her hair, riding side saddle.

Lady Godiva was a popular subject of artists in the Victorian period. She was the wife of the 11^th Century Anglo Saxon Earl Leofric of Mercia, one of the English Kingdoms, and is said to have ridden naked through the streets of Coventry to persuade her husband to reduce the tax burden on his people. The Earl and Countess were generous benefactors to religious houses, cathedrals and churches before the Norman Conquest of 1066.
