A rare and charming Copeland Parian figure by Raffaele Monti of a girl kneeling on a tree stump to look closely at a ladybird, made for the Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union, and dated 1876. The figure has good detailing with ferns and foxgloves growing around the base of the tree stump, which has rough-textured bark. Marked ‘Copeland Copyright Reserved’. Height 39½ cm (15 ½ ”).
The only reference we have found to this figure is in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” page 104 where he simply states ‘Girl with Ladybird. Little is known of this piece.'
Condition There is a shallow chip to the side of the base and a dark firing line between the tree and the dress. Otherwise perfect.
