A charming bust of The Mother by Copeland, dating from c 1871 – 1880, from the sculpture by Raffaelle Monti, showing the sympathetically modelled young woman with her baby.  It is marked R Monti 1871 Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union Copyright reserved Copeland. The bust is date-marked 1876 and the socle 1875.  Size: 36½cm high x 23cm wide (14.4” x 10”) approx.

Raffaelle Monti was a sculptor, author and poet.  This piece was made following the great success of the well-known Veiled Bride.  It shows again the skill that Monti had in portraying the effect of veiled figures.

This bust is illustrated in the “Parian Phenomenon” page 180 fig 586 and in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” page 218 fig B52. 

Condition: This bust is in very good condition. The separate socle has been glued on and there are traces of paint inside the socle.
