SOLD

A fine large Parian bust of the famous Puritan preacher and writer John Bunyan (1628 – 1688), most known today for his book “The Pilgrim’s Progress”. Bunyan fought on the Parliamentary side during the English Civil War and spent some periods in prison following the Restoration of the Monarchy. The Pilgrim’s Progress was a popular moral allegory in the 19th and early 20th century and influenced many other writers, notably Louisa May Alcott who referenced it powerfully in “Little Women”.

The bust is taken from the original, probably marble, bust by Edward William Wyon (1811 – 1885) and is marked Bunyan and the sculptor’s name.  The bust has no manufacturer’s marks. The Wedgwood version is illustrated in the “Parian Phenomenon” page 197 fig 656.

Height: 34½ cm (13½“)

Condition: Excellent: odd specks from the firing process (see photographs)
