A scarce and well-modelled Copeland Parian bust of the Hungarian politician Lajos, or Louis, Kossuth, dating from 1860.

Kossuth (1802 – 1894) was a Hungarian patriot and political activist who worked to establish a national identity of Hungary which was at that time part of the Hapsburg Austrian Empire. He spent some years in prison for his activities and, on release, continued to promulgate his vision via newspapers. After becoming a politician and a key leader in the Hungarian revolution of 1848 /49, Kossuth was forced to flee Hungary. The lack of political support from the British Prime Minister, Palmerston, was possibly a key factor in his leaving.  Kossuth eventually arrived in England where he was enthusiastically welcomed by thousands of the British people as the popular support was for Hungary against the Austrian Empire. Kossuth moved on to the USA where he was equally well received, later returning to England, where he lived for some years, and then Italy where he continued his political activities on behalf of Hungary.

Height: 22 1.2 cm (8”)
