A striking, scarce, finely modelled Parian figure of Hades, the God of the Underworld according to Greek mythology, and his three headed dog Cerberus. Cerberus prevented living humans from entering the underworld and kept the dead from re-entering the world of the living. This figure is extremely rare and is of unknown manufacture, probably late nineteenth century.
Height: 34cm (13.4”)
Condition: Good. There is restoration to the crown and the flames on his right side. Hades is usually depicted with a bident (pitchfork) so it may be that this is missing from his right hand. There are small firing faults to the right shoulder and some chipping round the base.
