A good quality small bust of William Shakespeare by Copeland. The bust is attached to a separate socle base by a brass nut and bolt. The bust is marked 'COPELAND' on the reverse. This bust was first produced in around 1848 and the sculptor was probably J Durham. The bust is illustrated in Robert Copeland's book on page 227. Height 20 cm (8").
Condition. This bust is in good condition. There is a tiny chip to the edge of the outer collar, a short firing flaw underneath the bust and the lace collar has been affected by the kiln smoke. The fine quality of the lace collar suggests that this may have been produced by dipping a piece of real lace in slip and then firing it.
