A striking Parian bust of Ajax on a separate socle, attached by a brass nut and bolt, and dating from c1850-80.  Ajax is shown wearing a helmet which has been moulded with centaurs and other classical figures.  Unmarked, although there is a very similar bust in the Worcester shape book (shape 30) shown in the Parian Phenomenon.  Height 31.5cm (12.4").
 

Ajax was a mythological Greek hero, noted for his strength and courage, the son of of King Telamon and Periboea, and is an important figure in Homer's Iliad.
 

Condition
This bust is in excellent, undamaged condition.  There is a short firing fault beneath the right ear - no chips or restoration.
