Parian figure of The Little Boat Builder ('Hit the Wrong Nail')

Code: 310804

SOLD

A charming Parian figure titled 'The Little Boat Builder', showing a young boy sucking his sore thumb which he had just hit with his hammer. The four sides of the base are inscribed ‘The Little Boat Builder’, ‘E B. Stephens ARA sc 1878’, ‘Art Union of London 1879’ and ‘Hit the Wrong Nail’. No marks for manufacturer. Height 45 cm (17.7").

An example of the gentle humour much loved by the Victorians.

Edward Bowring Stephens was a British sculptor born in Devon.

Condition: Good condition with just possibly a little restoration to the handle of the hammer where it joins the hammer head, and a shallow chip from beneath one corner of the base (although this is very smooth and may have been introduced during manufacture).
