A coloured Parian figure of Beatrice by Copeland after the original by the English sculptor Edgar Papworth Junior, originally sculpted in 1860.

This figure of the Italian poet (1265 –1321) Dante’s love, Beatrice, is hand painted and gilded, with delicate floral decoration on the clothing.  The figure is marked Copeland copyright reserved and dated 1890. This figure was also made uncoloured (as in the V&A collection) and with just gilding (as in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York).

The figure is pictured in the Parian Phenomenon in the initial set of coloured photos, and on pages 138, fig 485,  and 154, fig 519.

Condition: There is a small chip to the top point of the gilded star on the figure’s headdress which has been retouched. There are a few tiny nibbles round the edge of the base. Otherwise, the figure is in excellent condition.

Height: 55½ cm (22”).
