Copeland Parian figures of Young Naturalists

SOLD

Code: 13404

A finely-detailed pair of large Copeland Parian figures of a boy and girl known as the 'Young Naturalist and companion'. The boy has a bird's nest under his arm and is blowing an egg.  He has a string of blown eggs in his hand. The girl has a bouquet of hedgerow plants over her arm and is looking at a butterfly which has landed on the back of her hand. Both figures are marked 'COPELAND' and 'COPYRIGHT RESERVED'. That boy is marked 'Y 97' and the girl 'A 99'. The boy is 41 cm (16") tall and the girl is 40 cm (15.7") tall.

According to Robert Copland's book it is thought that the original title of this pair of figures was 'rustic children of England'. Both figures are attributed to the sculptor R J Morris. The figures were first produced in around 1878. It is presumed that the markings are date codes and that these figures date from 1897 and 1899.

Condition. Both of these figures are in excellent condition with no chips or restoration. It is possible that there are small additions missing to the figure of the girl as there are small holes in the back of the figure which might have been designed for this purpose. Please see the photographs.
