SOLD

Code: 230201

A charming and beautifully modelled pair of figures of Paul and Virginia by Copeland after Charles Cumberworth.  These delightful figures show Paul with his axe in one hand carrying his hat with a lively bird’s nest within it in the other hand while Virginia has a basket of flowers over her left arm and scatters birdseed from her apron onto the ground. These figures were shown at the Great Exhibition in 1851.  Paul is marked “Copeland” while Virginia is unmarked.  Height of Virginia 39cm (15.4")

The figures are illustrated on page 150 of the Parian Phenomenon, fig 512.

Paul et Virginie (or Paul and Virginia) is a short novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, first published in 1788 and set on the island of Mauritius. It tells the story of two childhood friends who grow up and fall in love. They are separated and the story ends tragically as they are about to meet again.  The novel was hugely popular in France and beyond, well into the 19th century.

Condition: there are some possible minor losses to the flowers in Virginia’s basket. Paul is in perfect condition.
