A Parian bust of the Prince of Wales

SOLD

Code: 221111

A good Parian bust of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841 to 1910), later King Edward VII, marked for the Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union from the 1863 original by Marshall Wood.  There is no manufacturer’s mark but it is probably by Copeland.

Marshall Wood RA made a number of marble busts of the Prince and Princess of Wales (Alexandra of Denmark) and statues of Queen Victoria – it is likely that the original of this bust was made to commemorate the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1863.

The bust is illustrated on page 103 of The Parian Phenomenon, fig 601 under “Copeland”. The companion piece of the Princess of Wales is on page 102, fig 597.

Height 33cm (13”)
