A Parian bust of Ajax, possibly by Worcester

Code: 230410

A striking Parian bust of Ajax, possibly by Worcester, and dating from c1850-80.  Ajax is shown wearing a helmet which has been moulded with centaurs and other classical figures.  Unmarked, although there is a very similar bust in the Worcester shape book (shape 30) shown in “The Parian Phenomenon” page 207 fig 682.

Ajax was a mythological Greek hero, noted for his strength and courage, the son of King Telamon and Periboea, and is an important figure in Homer's Iliad about the siege of Troy.

Height: 31.5cm (12.4").

This bust is in excellent condition with just three very small chips to the bottom of the bust at the back, just above the socle.  Please see our images where we show this.
