A fine, elegant bust of Purity by Copeland mounted on a socle, from the sculpture by Matthew Noble, marked for the Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union and with the date November 1869.
The bust was taken from a full length marble sculpture, which was also executed in Parian. In the full length piece, the young woman holds a lily in her right hand while in the bust it is tucked into a fold of her gown. The original marble stands outside the council chamber in Stoke-on-Trent Town Hall according to Robert Copeland’s book 'Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain' where the bust of the serene maiden is shown on pages 223/224 fig B65. It is also illustrated in the 'Parian Phenomenon' page 182 figure 595.
Height: 32cm (12½“)
The piece is in perfect condition.
