A beautiful Copeland Parian group of Lear and Cordelia from the sculpture by W Calder Marshall, dating from the second half of the 19th Century (first moulded in 1860). This powerful piece is finely modelled, showing off the full skill of the sculptor.

The figure derives from the play “King Lear” by Shakespeare, Act V Scene 3 when Lear enters, bearing the dead body of his youngest daughter in his arms.  This group is illustrated in the “Parian Phenomenon” page 141 figure 491 and in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” page 109 fig GP41.
