A Copeland tinted bust of Purity

A good bust of Purity by Copeland, with socle, from the sculpture by Matthew Noble, marked for the Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union and with the date November 1869.

This bust unusually has turquoise and pink tinting with gilded highlights.

The bust was taken from a full length marble sculpture, also executed in Parian. In the full length piece, the young woman holds a lily in her right hand while in the bust it is tucked into a fold of her gown. The original marble stands outside the council chamber in Stoke-on-Trent Town Hall according to Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” where the bust of the serene maiden is shown on pages 223/224 fig B65. It is also illustrated in the “Parian Phenomenon” page 182 figure 595.
