A good quality Copeland Parian figure of the Reading Girl, taken from a 1838 marble original which was sculpted by P Macdowell and placed in Bridg(e)water House. This Parian version was commissioned by the Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union in 1869. The figure has impressed marks around the base: 'P MACDOWELL RA SCULPT. 1869', 'CERAMIC AND CRYSTAL PALACE ART UNION' and 'COPYRIGHT RESERVED COPELAND' with a letter code beneath.
This figure is illustrated in the “Parian Phenomenon” page 146 fig 504 and in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” page 169 fig S135.
Height 33¼cm (13½").
Condition
There is a small chip at the front of the base and 2 or 3 tiny frits. There is a faint firing fault also at the front. Otherwise the figure is in fine condition.
