SOLD

Code: 240509

A large and rare Copeland Parian figure of ‘Nymph Preparing for the Bath’ (also called ‘Nymph untying her Sandal’), produced for the Crystal Palace Art Union in c1858.  The figure has a subtle use of gilding and colouring to highlight parts of the jewellery and clothing.  Marked 'Crystal Palace Ary Union' and 'COPELAND'.  Height 44.5cm (17.5")

This is a copy of an original marble sculpture by John Bell, owned by the Earl of Yarborough and now in the Usher Art Gallery in Lincoln.  Queen Victoria bought a copy of this Parian figure from the Crystal Palace Art Union in 1859.

Condition: there is a firing flaw part way across the base, which runs up the back of the figure through the rock on wich the nymph is sitting (please see our photos).  Otherwise excellent condition.
