A tinted Parian bust of Ophelia by Copeland for the Crystal Palace Art Union. This bust is modelled in white Parian with peach-coloured and gilded highlights and is presented on a plinth. Ophelia was a character in Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet”.
This bust is illustrated in plain white without a plinth in The Parian Phenomenon page 181 fig 591 and in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” pages 222 fig B61. Separate socle.

Condition
There is a small chip to the central leaf at the top front of the wreath which has been touched up with gold paint (pictures 5 and 10). Some nicks to top of socle and a small chip to a back corner of the base. The gold has been rubbed in a few places.
