An early Parian figure of Narcissus by Copeland and Garrett

SOLD

Code: 250207

An early and uncommon Parian figure of Narcissus by Copeland (Copeland and Garrett) from the original marble by John Gibson, made for the Art Union of London in 1846. This was the first Parian model issued by an Art Union.  The original is on the top floor of the Royal Academy in Piccadilly, London. The Queen has a Parian version in her collection at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, England.

The figure shows Narcissus, who has fallen in love with his reflection, gazing down at it in a pool. The Art Union insisted on the addition of the fig leaf.

The printed text within the figure’s base states 'NARCISSUS BY GIBSON R.A. Modelled by E R Stephens and executed in STATUARY PORCELAIN by COPELAND AND GARRETT FOR THE ART UNION OF LONDON 1846'.  Height 30.5 cm (12”); Width of base 20.5 cm (8”)

The Parian Phenomenon has a picture of the marble original on page 32 and of the Osborne House figure on page 44.  The main illustration is on page 139, fig486.  This figure is also illustrated in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” page 160 fig S114.
