A Minton Parian figure of Una and the Lion.  This desirable and attractive figure by John Bell was made for Summerly’s Art Manufactures and exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851.  The figure has the registration mark for 19 August 1847 and “John Bell” and the Minton ermine mark on the top of  the base with MINTON below. Date mark for 1870.  Minton made the figure  as a companion piece for Ariadne and the Panther which was taken by John Bell from the marble (1812) by Dannecker.  This figure was later copied in life-sized marble by John Bell and exhibited at the 1862 exhibition.
 

Size of base: 30½ cm (12”)l x 18 cm (8”)w.  Overall dimensions: cm: 35½h  x 33l x 18w / inches: 14h x 13l x 7w

 

The figure is illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon page 64 fig 80 with a photograph of the marble version on page 39 fig 39.
 

Una is a character representing True Religion in Spencer’s “Faerie Queen” who is given protection by a lion, representing England.

 

Condition: This figure is in perfect condition except for a miniscule nick on the base corner near the manufacturing marks.
