A rare tinted Parian bust of Juno by Copeland

SOLD

Code: 251210

A rare tinted Parian bust of Juno by Copeland.  The background colour of the headdress is  a pale bluey-green with glazed and gilt highlights which extend into the hair  going down to the neck.  This bust is illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon page 180 fig 588 and a larger version in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” page 212 fig B36. The description of this bust is at page 212 B37.  Copeland notes that the original Statuary Price Book lists this tinted version at 14/- (14 British shillings (there were 20 shillings in the £1) ) while the plain version was 10/-. Separate socle.  Impressed Marks: Malempré Copio 1865 Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union Copeland. Height: 33cm (13”).

This striking and regal bust is a copy by Malempré of the Roman original in the Museo Nazionale in Rome.

Juno was the Roman queen of the gods, wife of Jupiter. In Greek she was called Hera, Wife of Zeus.

Louis Auguste Malempré was one of the sculptors of French origin working in a range of materials in England in the 19th century.  He worked as an assistant to Theed who sculpted the larger Copeland Parian version of Juno. Malempré has more Copeland Parian pieces attributed to him than any other sculptor.

Condition: The original socle has been replaced with a period socle by Minton (ermine mark). There is a restored chip to the front edge (see photo). Faint scouring marks to chest.
