A Copeland Parian Figure of the Reading Girl

Code: 280307

A sensitively modelled Copeland Parian figure of the Reading Girl, taken from an 1838 marble original which was sculpted by P Macdowell and placed in Bridgewater House.  This Parian version was commissioned by the Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union in 1869.  The figure has impressed marks around the base: 'P MACDOWELL RA SCULPT. 1869', 'CERAMIC AND CRYSTAL PALACE ART UNION' and 'COPYRIGHT RESERVED COPELAND' with a letter code beneath.

This figure is illustrated in the “Parian Phenomenon” page 146 fig 504 and in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” page 169 fig S135.

Height 33¼cm (13½").

Very good. Professional restoration to a small shallow chip underneath the left side of the book, and some fritting to the bottom edges of the figure.
