A Copeland Parian bust of Lord George Bentinck, marked “Count d’Orsay Sculpt 1848 Copeland”. The bust has a separate socle attached with a bolt.

Lord George Bentinck (1802-848) was a Tory English politician and race horse owner who led the opposition to Robert Peel’s free trade policies. The original bust was sculpted in 1848 by the Frenchman Count d’Orsay to commemorate Bentinck’s death, and the Parian version was shown at the 1851 Great Exhibition.

This figure is illustrated in “The Parian Phenomenon” page 186 figure 617 and in Robert Copeland’s book “Parian - Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain” page 201 fig B10 and in Shinn’s “Victorian Parian China”, Plate 24.
