A good figure of the Crouching Venus on a square dais

SOLD

Code: 290305

A good figure of the Crouching Venus on a square dais by an unknown manufacturer,  c. last 1/4 of C19.

This figure is a copy of the well-known Roman marble statue of Aphrodite  in the British Royal Collection, now in the British Museum https://www.rct.uk/collection/69746/aphrodite-or-crouching-venus. This Roman 2nd century AD statue is one of many Roman copies and variants of a Greek 200BC original. King Charles I bought the Royal Collection statue from Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga II of Mantua. Following Charles’ execution, it was sold to the artist Peter Lely and returned to the Royal Collection after the Restoration of the Monarchy. This Parian version has a bracelet on the upper right arm as opposed to the left arm in the Royal Collection marble.

Height including dais: 29 cm (11.4”)

Condition: Excellent. There is some slight roughness on her right side of the base and a few very faint kiln marks.
